Love-Hate-Swing Groups

Love-hate-swing is a model of leadership borrowed from political campaigning. The goal of the model is to win the day by getting the swing-group to see the leader and his agenda through the eyes of the love-group while minimizing the disruption of the hate-group. Each group has different needs and goals. Leaders, similarly, have different concerns with and use different tactics for dealing effectively with each group.

Stop-Think-Lead

A leadership style that requires us to stop and think twice before we speak and start leading. The style assumes that when it comes to leadership, our first thought is always the wrong thought. The style emphasizes not reacting top-of-mind, taking time to identify achievable goals, and responding to leadership challenges with tactics that move an organization forward without making enemies or damaging egos.

Dish-out

A goal-oriented, drill-sergeant leadership style characterized by getting things done regardless of the consequences. These leaders often make enemies and create roadblocks hindering future advancement. Dish-out leaders are very productive and accomplish a lot, but usually at great personal cost.

Give-in

A people-oriented, give-in leadership style characterized by making and maintaining friendships regardless of the consequences. These leaders don’t make enemies, but they can be manipulated by others and consequently often are overcommitted and chronically underperforming.

Robotic

A rule or data-oriented, mechanical leadership style characterized by its detachment from emotion and people. These leaders give off an aloof vibe which unfortunately can communicate lack of concern for employees and company goals. The robotic leadership style often combines with the dish-out leadership style to form what we refer to as a dish-bot. The dish-bot is aloof, results-oriented, rule-oriented, and can be perceived as emotionless. Not the best of combinations for most leadership situations.
